Puig beat American Nicole Gibbs 6-4, 6-2 to advance to the quarterfinals.
Fifth-seeded Yaroslava Shvedova swatted six aces and saved all six break points she faced in a 6-0, 6-2 win over American qualifier Sachia Vickery.
Former champion Mariana Duque-Marino and Julia Glushko also won their second- round matches. Duque-Marino captured the title at this tournament in 2010.
