Birmingham, AL – Ty Long kicked the eventual game-winning 31 upset over No. 22 Southern Mississippi at Legion Field.
With the game tied at 31, UAB (3-8, 3-5 C-USA) used a 10-play, 49-yard drive down to the Southern Mississippi 20 -- sparked by a huge 32-yard completion to Patrick Hearn on 3rd-and-2 -- before Long was good from 38-yards out with 3:04 to go in the game.
Southern Mississippi (9-2, 5-2) had a chance to at least get the game tied on its ensuing drive. The Golden Eagles moved the ball to UAB's 44 and faced a crucial 3rd-and-5. On the play, Austin Davis completed a short pass to Quentin Pierce, but the Golden Eagles were called for a 15-yard personal foul, moving the ball all the way back to the their own 41.
On 3rd-and-20, Davis completed a pass to Ryan Balentine for 14 yards, setting up a 4th-and-6.
Davis' pass on the play was batted down and UAB held on for its first win over a ranked opponent since November 6, 1999.
