On the heels of their 11th World Series title, the St. Louis Cardinals announced on Monday that manager Tony La Russa has retired and will not return for a 17th season with the team.

The 67-year-old skipper ranks third on the all-time managerial wins list with 2,728 victories for the White Sox (1979-1986), Athletics (1986-1995) and Cardinals (1996-present).

La Russa has won the Manager of the Year Award on four different occasions and led St. Louis to seven division titles and two World Series titles, as well as an NL pennant in 2004.

La Russa also won a championship with Oakland in 1989, making him one of only two men to manage a World Series winner in both leagues. Sparky Anderson won with the Cincinnati Reds and Detroit Tigers.
