Detroit Lions running back Joique Bell has spent all summer on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, as he recovers from offseason knee and Achilles surgeries. Although Ameer Abdullah's hype has exploded in his absence, fellow rookie running back Zach Zenner says the job is still Bell's to lose.
"I think it plays a big role, yeah," Zenner said, per Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press, speaking about his impact on special teams. "Especially when Joique returns, he's set up to be the starting running back at this point. So for me to make an impact on this team I think for sure right away it's going to have to be special teams."
Abdullah has stood out in training camp and rushed for 67 yards on seven carries in Detroit's preseason victory over the New York Jets last week. He has drawn comparisons to another great running back in Lions history, leading some to forget about Bell altogether.
Bell, however, led the team in rushing last season with 860 yards and seven touchdowns. He also caught 34 passes for 322 yards and a touchdown. He is in his sixth NFL season and offers much more than Abdullah in terms of experience.
Zenner is an undrafted rookie who is fighting for a spot on the team.
