Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Derek Jeter will not play in the New York Yankees' series opener with the Boston Red Sox Friday at Fenway Park due to rest purposes.
The retiring shortstop is coming off an emotional final game at Yankee Stadium on Thursday night, during which Jeter singled in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning in his final home at-bat to give New York a dramatic 6-5 victory over Baltimore.
Jeter has played in each of the Yankees' last 11 games during his farewell tour.
"He said he'd like to have a day (off)," said Yankees manager Joe Girardi in a press conference held prior to Friday's game. "It's always difficult at this point because everyone wants to see him, and I understand that, but he's been through a lot. Our team's been through a lot. We've played 18 games in the last 17 days. We got in here late last night. I think he's going to take a day."
Jeter did say after Thursday's contest that he does plan to play in this weekend's season-ending three-game series out of respect for the Yankee-Red Sox rivalry.
