New York Giants tackle David Diehl will undergo surgery to repair an unstable right thumb.

The procedure, whose recovery time has been cited as six weeks, will be performed on Wednesday by Dr. Robert Hotchkiss at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan.

Diehl did participate in practice on Tuesday, but with a cast protecting his right hand. An MRI and examination by Hotchkiss this morning confirmed that surgery would be necessary.

The Giants have two preseason games remaining, this Saturday against the Jets and Aug. 29 against the Patriots. New York then plays in Dallas for the season opener on Sept. 8 and faces Denver, Carolina and Kansas City.
