NEW YORK, NY – Since the NFL Draft switched to a three-day event in 2010, no Football Championship Subdivision player has been selected in the first round on Thursday night.
But the rest of the weekend is expected to be an active time for FCS prospects.
A year ago, 21 players were selected in the draft from FCS programs. A similar number could be added this weekend over the second and third rounds Friday night and the fourth through seventh rounds on Saturday.
Appalachian State wide receiver Brian Quick has been considered the top FCS prospect for some time, but Montana cornerback Trumaine Johnson appears to be rising on draft boards to challenge that notion. Regardless, both players are expected to be selected Friday night.
"It's a great feeling," Quick said. "I worked my tail off to just get where I'm at right now. And it took a lot of help also, but I still worked to get where I am right now. Being from a smaller division, I had to work that much more to get exposure."
In an FCS draft class that is particularly deep for defensive backs, Coastal Carolina's Josh Norman and Furman's Ryan Steed, a pair of cornerbacks, also are considered Day 2 possibilities. In addition, South Dakota offensive tackle Tom Compton is highly regarded among FCS draft prospects.
The St. Louis Rams kick off Round 2 just after 7 p.m. ET Friday. Plenty of FCS prospects will be tuned in the rest of the way.
