London, England – China's Wu Jingyu and Spain's Joel Gonzalez Bonilla captured taekwondo gold medals in their respective weight classes Wednesday.
For Wu, the victory in the 49-kilogram category was never given but not a surprise. She won gold four years ago in Beijing and is a two-time world champion, and didn't have much trouble advancing through the bracket this time around.
Two of her victories came by way of point gap, and she defeated Spain's Brigitte Yague Enrique by an 8-1 margin in the gold medal match.
Thailand's Chanatip Sonkham and Croatia's Lucija Zaninovic took the bronze medals in the weight class.
Like Wu, Bonilla was the top seed in his draw, the men's 58kg. The two-time world champion beat South Korea's Lee Daehoon, 17-8, in the gold medal match.
Russia's Alexey Denisenko and Colombian Oscar Munoz Oviedo claimed the bronzes.
