MONTREAL – Aleksandra Wozniak became the first Canadian in 20 years to each the Rogers Cup quarterfinals, beating American Christina McHale 7-6 (5), 6-3 on Saturday in a rain-delayed match.
Wozniak was one game from finishing off McHale on Friday night when the third-round match was halted by rain. The Canadian needed only a few minutes to close out the match Saturday in the hardcourt event.
The resident of Blainville, a suburb north of Montreal, became the first Canadian since Patricia Hy-Boulais in 1992, and only the fourth in modern times to reach the quarterfinals.
Wozniak will face Caroline Wozniacki, a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 winner over Varvara Lepchenko.
The winner will play fifth-seeded Petra Kvitova, a 6-3, 6-2 winner over Tamira Paszek.
In the other quarterfinals, 10th-seeded Na Li beat second-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska 6-2, 6-1, and 16th-seeded Lucie Safarova topped Roberta Vinci 6-2, 6-2.
