Braves ink Teheran to six-year deal

Lake Buena Vista, FL ( - The Atlanta Braves agreed to terms on a six-year contract with pitcher Julio Teheran on Friday.

Financial terms of the deal were not announced, but it runs through the 2019 season and includes an option for the 2020 campaign.

Teheran went 14-8 with a 3.20 ERA in 30 starts last season with the Braves, finishing fourth in Rookie of the Year voting. The right-hander struck out 170 batters and walked just 45 in 185 2/3 innings, leading all major league rookies with a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 3.78.

"We are excited to sign Julio to a long-term contract," Braves Executive Vice President and General Manager Frank Wren said. "He is one of the best young pitchers in the National League and one of our core of players we expect to be together for a number of years."

Teheran, 23, owns a career record of 15-9 with a 3.44 ERA in 37 games (34 starts).

Originally signed as a non-drafted free agent in July 2007, Teheran made his major league debut during the 2011 season, when he appeared in five games.
