Victoria's Secret model injured in surfing accident off Italian coast wakes from coma

A Dutch Victoria's Secret model who fractured her skull in a surfing accident off the Italian coast last week has awakened from a medically induced coma, according to Italian media reports.

Yfke Sturm, who has also walked the runways for Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein and Dior, was riding a  motorized surfboard -- or "jet surf" -- off the island of Ischia last week when she fell and hit her head, The Telegraph reported.

The 33-year-old, London-based model, who gave birth to a son in July, reportedly suffered a fractured skull and several fractured vertebrae. She was airlifted to a hospital in Naples, where doctors said she is at serious risk of permanent paralysis.

The Italian newspaper La Repubblica reported that Sturm is out of her coma and showing signs of improvement. On Friday, the model's father, Wilfred Sturm, told Dutch newspaper The Telegraaf that his daughter had a "hairline fracture in her skull" but there was "no bleeding."

Sturm's career began at age 15 when she won the 1997 International Elite Model Look Contest. In an Aug. 8 posting on her Facebook page, Sturm wrote, "Words can not descibe [sic] how excited we are for the arrival of our son Alexander!!"

Sturm, who hosts Holland's Next Top Model, also works as an ambassador for the Dutch Red Cross Foundation. She founded her own charitable organization, Yfke 4 Kids, which helps children affected by AIDS.
