Roseanne Barr admitted that she uses “troll accounts” to post her unfiltered thoughts on Twitter without fear of public backlash.
The 66-year-old comedian got in a heap of trouble one year ago when she tweeted a racist comment directed at former Obama aide Valerie Jarrett. In response, ABC quickly pulled the plug on Season 2 of her “Roseanne” revival, despite its high ratings at the network.
In a recent interview, Barr admitted that the experience didn’t teach her to stifle her thoughts on social media, but merely to present them without her famous name attached to avoid trouble.
“I just have a lot of, what do you call it? Troll accounts. So I say what I want under an anonymous name,” she told TMZ while waiting outside of LAX. “Yeah, and I say the stuff I want to say.”
While the star didn’t give details on how many troll accounts she uses or what topics she covers on them, she admitted that no one else helps her run that part of her social media. As a result, Barr is able to post anything she wants anonymously without the public being able to trace her words back to her.
“I think everybody’s got troll backup accounts really,” she said. “If they want to say anything.”
In May 2018, Barr directed a tweet at Jarrett, who is African-American and was born in Iran, saying “muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby.” She initially apologized and blamed the gaffe on Ambien. However, she later blamed ABC’s move to cancel “Roseanne” and kill her character off in the spinoff titled “The Conners” on her co-star Sara Gilbert.
“She destroyed the show and my life with that tweet,” Barr said of Gilbert’s initial tweet about the ordeal. “She will never get enough until she consumes my liver with a fine Chianti.”
Since being fired from ABC, Barr has not returned to comedy or TV. Instead, she opted to host a talk show on her YouTube channel in which she interviews people about world issues. She previously talked with self-proclaimed hip-hop artist and news analyst An0maly to discuss a slew of topics including Jussie Smollett, Alyssa Milano and Democrats.
