A Scottish bride-to-be was fighting for her life Saturday after having her throat cut hours after reportedly calling off her marriage.

The 32-year-old woman, named locally as Lisa Whyte, had been due to marry Steven McKee at Falkirk Register Office in central Scotland but the ceremony was canceled.

She was attacked at her home in the nearby village of Slamannan in Stirlingshire.

Police launched a search for a suspect and a man was later arrested in Newcastle, northeastern England.

Whyte was flown by air ambulance to Glasgow's Southern General Hospital, where she was reported in serious condition.

The arrested man, who is 37, was expected to appear in court Monday, police said.

One neighbor, who did not want to be identified, said: "(It) was supposed to be the happiest day of Lisa's life, but instead this terrible thing happened.

"It's shocking. She was a lovely wee girl with two beautiful daughters."

Another said Whyte's family, including her daughters aged four and five, had gathered around her hospital bedside.

"I can't believe she's lying there in hospital. It is just terrible,” she said.
