VATICAN CITY – Pope Francis is following up on his call for priests to eschew fancy cars.
A Vatican official says the 76-year-old pope visited the Vatican garage where the city state's fleet of cars is housed to see if they met his "humble" standards.
The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to divulge the pope's activities, said the impromptu visit Thursday followed Francis' comments over the weekend in which he said it "hurts my heart when I see a priest with the latest model car." He urged priests to use "more humble ones" and dedicate the savings to the poor.
Francis, who traveled around his native Buenos Aires by bus as a cardinal, has called for a more humble church that looks out for the poor.
