THE HAGUE, Netherlands – International Criminal Court judges have rejected a request by former Ivory Coast President Laurent Gbagbo to hold the start of his trial in his home country.
Gbagbo is charged with involvement in violence that left some 3,000 people dead in the aftermath of 2010 presidential elections. He denies the charges.
In a ruling issued Monday, judges said they made their decision after paying "particular regard to the security risks and logistical implications" of starting the case in Ivory Coast or Tanzania.
The trial of Gbagbo and a co-accused, former youth leader Charles Ble Goude, is scheduled to start Nov. 10 at the court's Hague headquarters.
Ivorians voted Sunday in the first presidential election since 2010. President Alassane Ouattara, who beat Gbagbo in 2010, is widely expected to prevail.
