BAGHDAD -- Iraqi authorities say four policemen were killed in an overnight shootout at what appeared to be a bomb workshop in western Baghdad.

Baghdad police officials said Saturday that authorities who were tipped off by a carjacking and followed the suspects back to a house in the mostly Sunni neighborhood of Saidiya.

Gunmen at the house opened fire on security forces and the shootout that lasted until dawn before they escaped through a back door.

Officials said six policemen and five residents were also wounded in the clashes.

An emergency room worker at Yarmouk Hospital confirmed the casualties.

All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media.
