German federal prosecutors say they have charged a 29-year-old German-Tunisian dual national with membership in a terrorist organization that is fighting in Syria.

Prosecutors said in a statement Monday that Sabri El-D., whose last name wasn't given in line with privacy laws, was charged Nov. 10 with allegedly belonging to Junad al-Sham.

Prosecutors allege the suspect had decided to travel to Syria in 2014 to join the organization but never successfully made it there. He made another attempt in May, telling a recruiter that he was prepared to act as a bodyguard for the leader of Junad al-Sham.

He was arrested in June and has been in custody since.
