Air Berlin plane makes emergency landing in Thailand after engine problem; all 249 aboard safe

BANGKOK – German carrier Air Berlin says one of its planes made an emergency landing on Thailand's Phuket island after experiencing engine trouble.

The company says all 249 passengers and crew were unharmed after the landing Thursday night.

Phuket Airport Director Pratueng Sornkham says the Airbus A330 turned back 30 minutes after take-off when a problem was detected in its left engine, and a tire burst when it landed.

The aircraft was scheduled to fly from Phuket to Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, where Air Berlin's sister airline Etihad is based. An Etihad jet arrived Friday morning to transport most on the passengers. The Air Berlin jet remained grounded.

Pratueng said the emergency landing forced a temporary closing of Phuket's airport. That delayed flights for more than 1,000 other passengers.
