NEW YORK – A former New York City hospital worker who admitted embezzling $1.2 million from Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center by ordering printer toner, stealing it and then reselling it has been sentenced to 7 ½ years in prison.
In a deal with prosecutors, Marque Gumbs pleaded guilty in July to grand larceny.
As part of the plea agreement, prosecutors recommended a sentence of 2 ½ to 7 ½ years in state prison. Gumbs could have received up to 25 years in prison if he'd been convicted at trial.
Gumbs was sentenced on Monday.
As part of his sentence, he must forfeit some of the items he purchased through the scam. The Wall Street Journal (http://on.wsj.com/pHDnmt ) says they include a BMW, two laptops, a digital camera, an iPod and two jewel-encrusted watches.
