Wambach to miss US women's trip to China
CHICAGO – Forward Abby Wambach will miss the U.S. women's team's trip to China for the Four Nations Tournament because of a heel injury.
Seven veterans who missed this month's training camp at Carson, Calif., were added to the roster Thursday: Shannon Boxx, Rachel Buehler, Amy LePeilbet, Carli Lloyd, Heather Mitts, Heather O'Reilly and Christie Rampone. They had been given time off following their club seasons.
Sixteen of the 25 players at the training camp were picked, including forward Sydney Leroux and midfielder Megan Klingenberg from the 2008 championship U.S.-Under 20 team.
Midfielder Tobin Heath, the 2009 Hermann Trophy winner at Stanford, returns to the roster following reconstructive ankle surgery. Lindsey Tarpley is on the roster following her recovery from a torn anterior cruciate ligament.
Goalkeepers Hope Solo and Jill Loyden remain sidelined. Nicole Barnhart, who started in World Cup qualifying, and Ashlyn Harris are the goalkeepers on the roster.
The U.S. is making its eighth trip to the tournament but first since 2008. The Americans have won it six times.
The U.S. plays Sweden on Jan. 21, Canada two days later and China on Jan. 25. All games are at the Yongchuan Sports Centre.
