Den Bosch, The Netherlands (SportsNetwork.com) - American qualifier Coco Vandeweghe beat China's Zheng Jie in Saturday's final at the grass-court Topshelf Open to capture the first WTA title of her career.
The 22-year-old Vandeweghe defeated Zheng by a 6-2, 6-4 margin at Autotron Rosmalen. The American dropped eight aces in the 70-minute match.
Vandeweghe played in her second career WTA final, having lost in Stanford two years ago.
"I was trying not to think about it being a final today," said Vandeweghe. "I got the first set and I thought to myself, 'One set to the good, one more to go, try and get the early break now and keep the pressure on her.'
"I was really just thinking about it step by step, just like how I would play in any match."
Zheng fell to 4-3 in her career finals, with her last win coming in Auckland in 2012.
Vandeweghe and Zheng had split two previous meetings during the 2011 campaign.
Vandeweghe took home $47,000 with the victory.
