Cincinnati, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - The Cincinnati Reds placed catcher Devin Mesoraco on the 15-day disabled list with a left hip impingement after he had not appeared behind the plate since April 12.

An April MRI showed no structural damage in his hip, and the Reds hoped that time off from catching would help him avoid a stint on the DL. Instead, he could require potential season-ending surgery.

Since his last appearance at catcher, the 2014 All-Star has served as Cincinnati's designated hitter and made pinch-hitting appearances. Mesoraco is batting just .178 with a .275 on-base percentage in 23 games this season.

To take Mesoraco's spot on the roster, the Reds activated left-handed pitcher Manny Parra from the DL. Parra made seven appearances out of Cincinnati's bullpen before missing a month with a neck injury.
