Red Wings roll past Devils

Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Henrik Zetterberg scored the game-winning goal late in regulation to lift the Detroit Red Wings to a 3-1 victory over the New Jersey Devils on Wednesday.

Darren Helm finished with two goals and Jimmy Howard made 12 saves for the Red Wings, who bounced back from a 5-2 loss to Boston on Monday to win their third game in their past four.

"We stuck with it for the full 60 (minutes) and were able to pull it off," said Helm.

Joe Whitney's first NHL goal was New Jersey's lone source of offense and Cory Schneider allowed all three goals on 28 shots in defeat.

Zetterberg gave Detroit a 2-1 advantage with 5:01 to play after he redirected Niklas Kronwall's blast from the point.

Helm put the finishing touches on the victory 36 seconds later with his second goal of the night as he raced through the neutral zone, held off a defender and backhanded a shot into the net.

After a scoreless first period, Whitney got the Devils on the board with a rising shot from the right circle with 4:13 remaining in the middle stanza.

"It feels good," Whitney said. "It's hard to score goals at any level so I'm pretty excited about it."

With 2:04 to play in the second, Helm drove around the net and stuffed the puck in on a wraparound for a 1-1 game.

Helm scored his 50th and 51st career goals ... Kronwall moved into 17th place all-time on the franchise's assist list with his 250th ... Devils forward Dainius Zubrus skated in his 1,200th career game ... Detroit improved to 12-2-1 in its last 15 meetings against New Jersey, including winning all three games this season ... Devils forward Steve Bernier left late in the third with a lower-body injury. He went into the boards awkwardly on a check attempt and had to be helped off the ice by his teammates.
