Porto, Portugal – Portuguese champions FC Porto named Paulo Fonseca as their new manager on Monday after he signed a two-year contract with the club.
The 40-year-old Fonseca began his coaching career just two years ago, but after guiding Pacos Ferreira to its best-ever finish last season, he has drawn the attention of bigger clubs.
Pacos finished in third place last season, earning themselves a Champions League qualifying place, and Fonseca will take over for Vitor Pereira, who left Porto to take up the same post at Saudi Arabian side Al-Ahli.
Porto edged Benfica by one point to win the league last season, and the club has captured seven of the past eight Portuguese Liga crowns.
