Pirates release Erik Bedard

The Pittsburgh Pirates have released pitcher Erik Bedard.

In 24 starts this season, the 33-year-old left-hander has a record of 7-14 with a 5.01 ERA. He was roughed up for six runs on six hits in 4 2/3 innings on Sunday in a loss to Milwaukee and has surrendered 11 runs on 15 hits in 9 1/3 innings over his last two outings.

Bedard joined the Pirates this season after a comeback in 2011 with Boston and Seattle. He missed the entire 2010 campaign because of a shoulder injury and was 5-9 with a 3.62 ERA in a combined 24 starts for the Red Sox and Mariners last year.

The once-promising Bedard has a career record of 63-64 with a 3.85 ERA in 192 games, all but three of which have been starts. He was a top prospect with Baltimore and earned a combined 28 wins over the 2006-07 seasons before arm problems began in 2008.
