Pittsburgh, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Pittsburgh Pirates activated catcher Chris Stewart from the 15-day disabled list and optioned catcher Tony Sanchez to Triple-A Indianapolis.

Stewart strained his right hamstring during spring training and missed the start of the season. He played five rehab games between Double-A Altoona and Indianapolis and went 6-for-18.

The 33-year-old Stewart batted .294 with a .362 on-base percentage, both career highs, in 49 games for Pittsburgh last year. He is expected to back up Francisco Cervelli.

Sanchez had three hits in three games this season with Pittsburgh.
