The Buffalo Sabres have announced that Pat LaFontaine has resigned as the team's president of hockey operations.

The team announced the move in a release issued on Saturday night. The team said LaFontaine is returning to his previous role working with the National Hockey League.

LaFontaine's resignation comes a little more than three months after he was hired as part of a front-office shakeup during which general manager Darcy Regier and coach Ron Rolston was dismissed.

LaFontaine's most significant move as president came in January, when he hired Tim Murray as general manager.
