SANTA FE, N.M. – One of several New Mexico teenagers who pleaded guilty to hazing younger members of their high school football team by sodomizing them with broomsticks has been sentenced to two years in a juvenile detention center.
State District Judge Mark Macaron handed down 18-year-old Michael Gallegos' sentence Tuesday.
Gallegos, a key figure in the case, pleaded guilty in May to two counts of criminal sexual penetration, three counts of attempted criminal sexual penetration, and one count of conspiracy.
Gallegos and five older football players at Robertson High School in Las Vegas, N.M., were accused of sodomizing younger players with broomsticks at an August 2008 preseason camp.
The older players were kicked off the team and expelled. They have since entered plea deals, with some being sentenced to jail time and others probation.
