Sulley Muntari scored the lone goal in a 1-0 defeat of Chievo at the Stadio M.A. Bentegodi on Tuesday, sending AC Milan back into first place in Serie A.

The Ghanaian hit a scorcher eight minutes into the match to get the visitors off the mark. It proved to be all the defending champions would need as they held on to collect all three points.

Chievo nearly pulled level in the dying minutes, but its goal was correctly ruled offside and was consequently disallowed.

Milan, which holds a game in hand over second-place Juventus, goes two points clear at the top of the table after a shock loss to Fiorentina last time out. Juventus can go back in front with a win over Lazio on Wednesday.

Chievo remains on 42 points, sitting ninth in Italy's top flight.
