Orchard Park, NY – Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly underwent surgery Friday to have cancer removed from his upper jaw.
A statement from doctors released through the Buffalo Bills said the procedure went "very well" and Kelly is "recovering comfortably."
Kelly announced Monday that he had a treatable form of cancer and said it had not spread to other parts of his body.
"Today, Mr. Kelly underwent a partial maxillectomy to remove a squamous cell carcinoma of the upper gingival caused be chronic irritation at the gum site," said the statement from doctors at Erie County Medical Center. "He underwent reconstruction with a dental obturator. The surgery went very well. We are hopeful for and anticipate a speedy recovery and successful outcome."
Doctors said Kelly would be released from the hospital when he feels comfortable to return home.
Kelly spent his entire NFL career with the Bills from 1986-96, leading the team to four consecutive Super Bowl appearances. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2002.
