Sydney, NS (SportsNetwork.com) - Brandon Hagy fired a 7-under 65 on Thursday and grabbed a 1-shot lead with the opening round of the Cape Breton Celtic Classic suspended due to darkness.

Hagy is playing in his PGA Tour Canada debut. He has played three Web.com Tour events this season, and has made one cut.

Matt Harmon, who won the Dakota Dunes Open earlier this year, opened with a 66 at The Lakes Golf Club and is alone in second place.

Adam Long, the Great Waterway Classic runner-up, carded a 5-under 67. He was joined in third place by Seann Harlingten, Daniel McCarthy and Chris Williams.

Former tour winners Russell Surber and Eugene Wong are tied for seventh at minus-4. They were joined there by tour rookie Paul Ferrier.

Hagy, who is playing on a sponsors exemption, played the back nine first on Thursday and opened with four pars in a row. He traded a birdie for a bogey from the 14th. Hagy bounced back from his bogey on No. 15 with an eagle at the par-5 16th.

After a par on 17, Hagy birdied the 18th to kick off a run of four consecutive birdie. That spurt moved him to 6-under.

Hagy converted back-to-back birdie chances on five and six. He was two strokes clear of the field at that point, but he tripped to a bogey on the par-3 eighth to trim his lead to one. He parred the last to end there.

Harmon also played the back nine first and carded birdies at the 13th and 18th. On the front side, Harmon made eagle on the par-5 first to jump to minus-4. He later birdied the fifth and eighth to move into second place.

NOTES: Hagy made the cut at the Nova Scotia Open, and finished tied for 40th ... Harmon was bogey-free in round one ... The round was suspended due to darkness with Jesse Larson standing at 1-under par through 16 holes ... Defending champion Mackenzie Hughes opened with a 72 and he is tied for 47th.
