Ft. Worth, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Brice Garnett carded a 4-under 66 on Friday to move into a 1-stroke lead after two rounds of the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial.
Garnett finished 36 holes at Colonial Country Club at 7-under-par 133. He is seeking his first career win on the PGA Tour.
"I'm just keeping my head down and trying to make as many birdies as possible," Garnett said. "I'm going to try to embrace it this weekend and have fun, and we'll see where we stand come Sunday."
Chris Stroud fired a 6-under 64 to vault into a tie for second place with Robert Streb at 6-under 134.
First-round leader Dustin Johnson managed an even-par 70 during his second round to drop into a share of fourth at 5-under-par 135. He is joined by three-time winner this season Jimmy Walker (68), Bo Van Pelt (68), Aaron Baddeley (67), Chad Campbell (66), Tim Clark (68) and Brian Davis (67).
Jason Dufner (69), Jordan Spieth (69), Brandt Snedeker (66), Harris English (70), David Hearn (69) and Brian Harman (67) are tied for 11th at minus-4.
Garnett started hot with a 17-foot eagle putt at the first, but gave one of those shots back with a bogey at the third.
After parring the next four holes, Garnett converted a 5-foot birdie putt at the eighth to get back to 5-under at the turn.
He rolled in a 16-foot birdie putt at the par-5 11th before reaching 7-under with a 6-foot birdie at the 16th. He parred his final two holes to claim the clubhouse lead.
"For some reason, it's just I've kind of adapted to Texas golf," said Garnett, who grew up in Missouri. "Growing up back home in the spring and fall, it gets pretty windy as well. I kind of relish whenever the wind blows and kind of got to control your ball."
Stroud started on the back nine and opened his day with a 5-foot birdie putt at the 10th.
He fell back to even par with a bogey at the 11th, but bounced right back with consecutive birdies at the 12th and 13th to move back into red numbers. He later converted a 23-foot birdie at the 16th to make the turn at 3-under.
Stroud continued to roll in lengthy birdies during his inward nine with putts from 22, 56, 26 and 34 feet at the first, fourth, sixth and eighth, respectively, to meet Garnett at 7-under.
But Stroud closed with a bogey at the ninth to fall a shot off the pace.
Streb also started on the 10th tee and surrounded a birdie at the 11th with eight pars during an outward 34.
Back-to-back birdies from inside 10 feet at the first and second moved him to 7-under, but he also could not hang on to his share of the lead and bogeyed the par-3 fourth to fall to minus-6.
He parred his final five holes to remain there.
NOTES: Garnett has made 15 of 18 cuts this season, but a share of seventh place at the Shell Houston Open is his lone top-25 finish ...
