Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (SportsNetwork.com) - Last week's Buenos Aires runner-up Fabio Fognini posted a tough second-round win Thursday at the inaugural $1.3 million Rio Open.

The third-seeded Italian, who titled in Chile two weeks ago, held off Uruguay's Pablo Cuevas 7-6 (7-1), 4-6, 6-3 on the red clay at Jockey Club Brasileiro.

Also on Thursday in Rio, Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov overcame Argentine qualifier Facundo Bagnis 6-7 (4-7), 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) to set-up a quarterfinal meeting with Fognini.
