Manchester United central defender Rio Ferdinand will miss Wednesday's Champions League Group C match against Benfica in Portugal, the Premier League club announced Tuesday.

Ferdinand missed matches against Tottenham and Arsenal this season because of a hamstring injury, but played against Bolton over the weekend.

With Ferdinand out, United be without its first-choice center backs as Nemanja Vidic will also miss the trip as expected with a calf injury.

Tom Cleverley (foot), Danny Welbeck (hamstring) and Rafael (shoulder) are also not with the team for the match, the first of the group stage.
