The St. Louis Cardinals placed shortstop Rafael Furcal on the 15-day disabled list Friday with a right elbow strain.

Furcal suffered the injury during Thursday's loss at Washington, exiting in the sixth inning after grimacing during a throw to second.

The Cardinals have replaced Furcal with Pete Kozma, recalling the shortstop from Triple-A Memphis. The 24-year-old Kozma batted .232 with 11 home runs and 63 RBI in 131 games with the Redbirds this season.

Selected in the first round by the Cardinals in 2007, Kozma made his major league debut last season, hitting .176 in 16 games.

The Cardinals also announced that Lance Berkman will be activated from the 15- day DL prior to Saturday's game. Berkman has been on the DL with a right knee injury since Aug. 3.
