Toronto, ON SportsNetwork.com) - France's Jo-Wilfried Tsonga leveled listless three-time champion Novak Djokovic in the third round of the $3.145 million Rogers Cup on Thursday.

It wasn't the day's only upset. Towering South African Kevin Anderson toppled Australian Open titlist and No. 3 seed Stan Wawrinka, and Spain's Feliciano Lopez knocked off No. 4 seed Tomas Berdych.

Later, No. 2 seed Roger Federer survived a scare in the day's final match to beat Marin Cilic in three sets.

The 13th-seeded Tsonga beat world No. 1 Djokovic 6-2, 6-2 in just 63 minutes, popping eight aces and breaking Djokovic four times compared to zero breaks for the return-of-serve artist from Serbia, who struggled in windy conditions.

Djokovic needed a third-set tiebreak to sneak past Gael Monfils on Wednesday at the Masters 1000 tennis event.

Tsonga, who lost to Djokovic in the 2008 Aussie Open final, beat the Serbian star for the first time in their last 12 meetings.

"For me today it was great," said Tsonga. "I played a good match. Soon in the match I was in good condition. I served pretty well, I was pretty aggressive.

"I'm working hard every day. It's not every day you get the rewards of what you're doing every day during the year. You leave your family, practice hard, suffer a lot on the court. And when you win a match like this, you just feel good."

Djokovic, who captured the Rogers Cup in 2007, 2011 and 2012, lost in straight sets on a hardcourt for the first time in 57 matches.

The Swiss Federer, a two-time champion, held off 15th-seeded Cilic of Croatia 7-6 (7-5), 6-7 (3-7), 6-4 in 2 hours and 39 minutes.

Meanwhile, the 6-foot-8 Anderson smacked 11 aces in powering his way past the Swiss Wawrinka 7-6 (10-8), 7-5 to reach the quarterfinals on the hardcourts at Rexall Centre.

Anderson also upset the Monte Carlo Masters titlist Wawrinka at the Masters event at Indian Wells earlier this season. His quarterfinal opponent will be seventh-seeded Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, who outlasted 17th-seeded Tommy Robredo of Spain 7-5, 5-7, 6-4.

Lopez won the last two sets to defeat the Czech Berdych 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in just under two hours. He moved on to face No. 6 seed Milos Raonic of Canada, last year's runner-up to Rafael Nadal. Raonic beat France's Julien Benneteau 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.

Eighth-seeded Andy Murray made the quarterfinals via a walkover when No. 12 seed Richard Gasquet of France pulled out due to an abdominal strain.

The two-time Grand Slam champion Murray won back-to-back Rogers Cups in 2009 and 2010 and captured the doubles title last year. He'll meet Tsonga Friday.

Also Thursday, fifth-seeded Spaniard David Ferrer charged back to best Ivan Dodig of Croatia 1-6, 6-3, 6-3, to earn a meeting with Federer.

The winner of this storied tournament, which was first held in 1881, will earn $600,000.
