Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz hit his 400th career home run on Wednesday.

Ortiz became the 49th player in major league history to reach the milestone with a leadoff homer to right off young Oakland right-hander A.J. Griffin in the fourth inning, his 22nd of the season.

The 36-year-old slugger has 342 homers since joining the Red Sox in 2003. He hit his first 58 with the Minnesota Twins.

The Red Sox lost the game, 3-2, and were swept by the Athletics for the first time since 2008.
