Prague, Czech Republic (SportsNetwork.com) - A three-goal blitz in the second period helped Canada to a 6-1 win over Russia in the gold medal game of the 2015 World Hockey Championship.
Canada won its first gold at the event since 2007 after goals by Tyler Ennis, Sidney Crosby and Tyler Seguin in the middle stanza turned a close game into a rout.
Claude Giroux and Nathan MacKinnon added goals early in the third period, while Cody Eakin opened the scoring in the final minutes of the first for the Canadians. Mike Smith stopped 11 shots in the win.
Evgeni Malkin's goal in the third period provided the only offense for Russia, which had won this event in 2014. Sergei Bobrovsky was tagged for all six goals on 37 shots.
In the bronze medal game earlier on Sunday, Nick Bonino and Charlie Coyle each had one goal and an assist and Connor Hellebuyck made 39 saves to help the United States shut out the host Czech Republic, 3-0.
Trevor Lewis also lit the lamp for the Americans, who bounced back from a 4-0 loss to Russia in the semifinals on Saturday.
The United States won its second medal in the last three world championships, a feat the country has not accomplished since 1952. Team USA also earned bronze in 2013.
