VANCOUVER -- Alexandre Burrows had more penalty minutes than shots and didn't register a point Friday night. Yet the Canucks' forward was once again getting his fair share of attention from the Boston Bruins.
With 33 seconds remaining in the first period, Burrows and Milan Lucic were battling before a neutral-zone faceoff. Officials had to separate them, but it didn't keep them from going at it again. Lucic tripped Burrows to the ice before the puck was dropped, and both were given penalties on the play -- Lucic for the trip and Burrows for embellishing.
Burrows is a fan favorite in Vancouver, yet one of the more disliked athletes in Boston right now. Following the Canucks' 1-0 win in Game 5, Burrows talked to the media.
Q: When you get a reputation as someone who will embellish calls, do you think that means you don't get the benefit of the doubt when you get cross-checked or catch a stick in the face?
A: Probably not. They have a tough job to do. It's Stanley Cup Final, they want to ref a good, tight game and make the calls they have to make. It's tough. They've got the fans yelling at them. I remember when I was a kid, I used to ref soccer. There were five people in the stands and I'd feel the pressure. They're feeling pressure too, and it's tough to make those calls after the whistle and I fully understand it.
Q: What was the difference between Games 3 and 4 in Boston and tonight's victory?
A: We were a little more physical and sharper in our reads. We were working a little smarter than we were the past two games. It makes a big difference when we're picking up guys instead of letting them go in the open ice.
Q: Was it nice to see Roberto Luongo bounce back with a 31-save shutout?
A: He always prepares the same, and he's a world-class goalie. We have so much confidence in him in this locker room. It's been like this for the last few years. In this playoff, it's a good thing we have him because he's been really good. We'll need him in Game 6 to play the same way.
Q: How about the effort from Maxim Lapierre? It's so hard to score on Tim Thomas and he found a way.
A: He was really good tonight. I knew he was prepared and he really wanted this game bad. He was skating with the puck with confidence. He was really getting in on the forecheck and finishing all his hits. That's what we need from him.
Q: How important is it to get contributions from that third line?
A: In the playoffs, you need different guys stepping up every night. We've had different guys playing big roles throughout these playoffs. Once again tonight, that third line scores a big goal and plays a really strong two-way game for us.
