Furth, Germany – Greuther Furth got a rough introduction to life in the Bundesliga on Saturday as the newly-promoted side sustained a 3-0 home defeat at the hands of Bayern Munich.
It took Bayern until the 43rd minute to open the scoring as Dante's header was blocked on the goal line but fired home from a yard out by Thomas Muller to put the visitors in front.
The lead was doubled just before the hour mark when Furth goalkeeper Max Grun saved a shot from Arjen Robben, only for the ball to fall into the path of Mario Mandzukic, who scored his first goal for Bayern by nodding home the rebound.
Furth offered little threat in attack and was a bit unfortunate to yield another goal 11 minutes from time as Robben's intended cross struck Bernd Nehrig and sent the ball looping over the head of Grun and into the net.
Dusseldorf 2, Augsburg 0
Augsburg, Germany - After a 15-year absence from the Bundesliga, Fortuna Dusseldorf returned in style with a 2-0 win at Augsburg on Saturday as Dani Schahin tallied both goals.
After an uninspiring first half, Dusseldorf seized the lead with just over 20 minutes to play as Schahin cut inside from the right wing and hammered a low shot into the bottom corner of the net from 25 yards.
Augsburg managed to avoid relegation last term, but Saturday's match wasn't a great way to start the new campaign as Schahin doubled his tally 10 minutes later by finishing off a cross from Robbie Kruse at close range.
Freiburg 1, Mainz 1
Freiburg, Germany - Mainz opened its Bundesliga campaign with a 1-1 draw at Freiburg on Saturday as Andreas Ivanschitz netted the equalizer from the penalty spot in the 65th minute.
The hosts went in front four minutes into the second half when Max Kruse brought down a long ball and beat a defender before firing his shot past goalkeeper Christian Wetklo.
But Freiburg was unable to maintain its lead as Nicolai Muller was brought down inside the penalty area by Julian Schuster, allowing Ivanschitz to place his spot kick into the top right corner of the net.
Nurnberg 1, Hamburg 0
Hamburg, Germany - A goal from Hanno Balitsch in the 68th minute was the difference as Nurnberg secured a 1-0 win at Hamburg on Saturday.
The win over Hamburg is Nurnberg's first in 20 years, but it could have been more if not for some good goalkeeping from Hamburg's Rene Adler in the first half.
However, Nurnberg was able to break through in the 68th minute when a corner kick was headed against the crossbar by Per Nilsson, leaving Balitsch to clean up the rebound.
Hamburg had two great chances to equalize when Nurnberg goalkeeper Raphael Schafer deflected Heiko Westermann's header onto the post, while Marcell Jansen saw a headed effort of his own strike the crossbar.
Monchengladbach 2, Hoffenheim 1
Monchengladbach, Germany - Monchengladbach got off to a winning start with a goal from Juan Arango in the 78th minute of a 2-1 victory over Hoffenheim at Borussia-Park on Saturday.
Arango had a hand in both goals for Gladbach with the first coming in the 33rd minute when he picked out Mike Hanke inside the area with a free kick that the forward headed past goalkeeper Tim Wiese.
Hoffenheim was pressing for the equalizer and found it midway through the second half when Gladbach goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen made a nice stop on Eren Derdiyok at close range, only for Roberto Firmino to score on the rebound.
But Arango made the most of another set-piece situation to fire his team to the win as he scored from a free kick by curling the ball into the lower right corner of the net.
Eintracht 2, Bayer Leverkusen 1
Frankfurt, Germany - After spending one season in the second tier of German football, Eintracht returned to the Bundesliga with a 2-1 home win against Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday.
Stefan Kiessling handed Leverkusen the lead on the half-hour mark when he scored on the rebound following a save from Eintracht goalkeeper Kevin Trapp on Karim Bellarabi.
But after Eintracht had a goal ruled out before halftime, the home side stormed back in the second half to level the match in the 57th minute as Takashi Inui's shot was parried by goalkeeper Bernd Leno into the path of Stefan Aigner, who easily finished the play.
And the comeback was completed eight minutes from time as Stefano Celozzi's cross was met by the head of Martin Lanig, who nodded it beyond the reach of Leno for the winning goal.
Wolfsburg 1, Stuttgart 0
Stuttgart, Germany - Bas Dost enjoyed a memorable Wolfsburg debut on Saturday as he scored a last-gasp goal to lift his side to a 1-0 win at Stuttgart.
The hosts spurned a great chance to claim three points for themselves when Vedad Ibisevic drew a foul on Wolfsburg's Emanuel Pogatetz inside the area, but after picking himself and stepping to the spot, he had his effort saved by goalkeeper Diego Benaglio in the 88th minute.
And the miss proved costly as Dost got free inside the area to head home Vieirinha's cross and steal all three points for his team.
