Company recalls 11 dietary supplements due to elevated levels of lead and mercury

A New York company is voluntarily recalling 11 of its supplements after the products were found to contain elevated lead and mercury levels.

The Ayurvedic supplements from Butala Emporium were distributed in New York through retail stores and sold online in California, Connecticut, Florida, Hawaii, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Washington D.C., and Puerto Rico.

No complaints or illnesses have been received to date.

The mercury levels in the supplements are high and exceed the weekly intake exposure and would likely be injurious to health, the FDA said in a news release. Short-term, the elevated mercury can cause kidney, stomach and intestinal symptoms. Month-long use could be potentially lethal and may cause symptoms such as psychiatric and personality disturbances and neurological conditions.

The concentration of lead exceeds the recommended daily lead exposure for children less than 6 years of age and women of childbearing age.
