President Barack Obama poked fun at himself and what he called the “whole controversy about Jay Z going to Cuba,” as he mingled with high-profile celebs and elected officials during the White House Correspondents Dinner over the weekend, C-Span is reporting.
Obama, who was recently under fire after Jay Z and his superstar wife visited Cuba on their fifth-year wedding anniversary, joked about how the ‘jiga man’ put him in the spotlight with his song that expressed outrage over the trip's controversy.
“Some things are out of my control,” said a smiling Obama. “It’s unbelievable. I got 99 problems and now Jay Z is one,” he said.
“That’s another rap reference,” he added, so his more “traditional” handlers could understand what he was talking about.
Last week, Obama also spoke about the controversial trip that raised questions about whether Americans should travel to the communist island.
“I wasn’t familiar that they were taking the trip," President Barack Obama told Savannah Guthrie on the “Today” show.
"My understanding is, I think they went through a group that organizes these educational trips down to Cuba. This is not something the White House was involved with. We’ve got better things to do,” he added.
The controversy began when the Carters (Jay Z’s real last name) took a trip to Cuba. The Treasury Department said the power couple was license to travel there and did not break the law.
Jay- Z responded to the politicians who criticized his recent trip with “Open Letter,” which went viral minutes after the rapper/entrepreneur put the song on his website.
