Trucker misses turn, lands in Mexican prison
Assault rifles, ammunition cause problems for driver
EL PASO, Texas – U.S. embassy officials in Mexico say the Mexican government is charging the trucker arrested last week with 268,000 bullets in Ciudad Juarez with smuggling military ammunition.
An embassy statement Thursday says 27-year-old Jabin Bogan of Dallas is confined to the Villa Aldama federal prison in the state of Veracruz and could face up to 35 years in prison.
Bogan's boss, Dennis Mekenye, says Bogan took a wrong turn in El Paso and crossed the Mexican border inadvertently into Juarez, where authorities inspected his truck and found the contraband.
Tom Crowley, a spokesman for the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, says the cargo intended for an Arizona ammunition shop "appears to be legitimate."
Aletha Smith, Bogan's mother, says she's been unable to see or talk to her son.
