A South African man charged with murdering a honeymooning British tourist has been granted free legal counsel.

Xolile Mngeni, 23, the first suspect arrested and charged in the case, appeared in court Thursday.

The other two suspects have appointed privately funded lawyers.

All three will appear in court Monday on charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances, hijacking and murder. The murder and robbery charges could carry life sentences.

Anni Dewani, her husband and a driver were hijacked nearly two weeks ago in a township outside Cape Town.

Gunmen forced Shrien Dewani and the driver from the vehicle. Anni Dewani's body was found the next morning.

Local media reported Shrien Dewani has hired a South African lawyer since returning to the UK.
