Romanian police descended into Bucharest's sewers looking for suspects who broke into a Bucharest home and hid the loot underground.

Police spokesman Alexandru Nicolae said eight people were detained in the Wednesday raid which happened in the sewers outside Bucharest's Gara de Nord main railway station.

Nicolae said officers believe that those involved in the break in early Wednesday lived in the sewers.

Leo Andreescu of the Save the Children charity says some 350 people, most of whom heroin addicts, live there.
