Heavy rain halts search for missing in Colombia apartment tower collapse

MEDELLIN, Colombia – Heavy rains and fears an adjacent building could fall have forced a halt in the search for 11 people trapped in the ruins of a collapsed Colombian apartment tower.

The city's emergency management director says he hasn't lost hope that someone has survived in the 22-story building that imploded on Saturday night. But Santiago Perez also said Monday that the odds are against it, given the weight of the rubble. At least one of the 11 is known to be dead.

Prosecutors say they will investigate the company that built the complex in Medellin's wealthy El Poblado district.

Officials on Friday ordered the tower's evacuation after residents complained of cracked walls.

The other five 54-unit apartment buildings were evacuated after the collapse.
