BEIRUT – Activists and Syrian state media say an explosion has struck a pro-government neighborhood in the central city of Homs, causing an unknown number of casualties.
The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says Sunday's blast in the Zahra district was caused by a car bomb. It says smoke could be seen billowing into the sky at the site, and that there are dead and wounded from the attack.
Syrian state television blamed the explosion on "terrorists," the term it uses to describe those fighting to oust President Bashar Assad. It also did not have a casualty figure.
The station broadcast footage that showed cars on fire and people trying to push other vehicles away from the blast site.
Provincial governor Talal Barazzi said the attack targeted reconciliation efforts in Homs.
