Nigeria's State Security Services says there was shooting in a failed jailbreak attempt at its headquarters near the presidential villa in the Nigerian capital, Abuja.

Two agents say a detainee shot a guard Sunday with a smuggled pistol. It was unclear if the guard survived. The agents spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak to reporters.

Security services spokeswoman Marilyn Ogar said a detainee tried to hit a guard on the back of his head with his handcuffs. Ogar's statement says the only shots fired were warnings by guards and soldiers.

Jailbreaks are common in Nigeria but not from the state security headquarters which holds suspects including alleged fighters in a northeastern Islamic uprising that has killed more than 1,000 people this year.
