Authorities in an eastern Chinese province say five middle school students have died after a school wall collapsed on them.

The Anhui Administration of Work Safety says on its website that the wall fell on the schoolgirls Monday as they gathered on the sidelines of a basketball game at Tongren Middle School in the city of Huaibei.

The administration says another student was injured. The cause of the incident is under investigation.

State broadcaster China Central Television says the five girls killed were resting at the foot of the wall when it collapsed.

China's official Xinhua News Agency says rescue workers had to use their bare hands rather than machinery to dig through the rubble to try to rescue the girls because several students were buried under the wall.
