The French Foreign Ministry says two French citizens kidnapped with five others on an oil platform in Nigeria earlier this month have been released.

The ministry, in a statement, is welcoming this "happy ending" and thanking all those who helped secure the release. The statement, released Wednesday night, gives no details about how the hostages were released or about the other hostages.

The two were abducted along with two Americans, two Indonesians and a Canadian from a platform run by London-based Afren PLC 11 kilometers (7 miles) offshore on Nov. 8.

Pirate and militant attacks are common in Nigeria's Niger Delta, one of the top sources of crude for the United States.
